'''Etnika''' is one of [[Malta]]'s leading modern [[Folk music|folk]] bands founded in 2000. 

The four founder members were composer [[Ruben Żahra]] (son of Trevor Żahra), traditional instrument maker [[Ġużi Gatt]], researcher [[Steve Borġ]] and musician [[Andrew Alamango]]. Their main task was to present a revival of old traditional Maltese instruments, at times, with a fusion with contemporary ones.

In 2000 Etnika released their first album, entitled ''Nafra'' Their second album 'Zifna' was released in 2003 and depicts the sentiment of the island nation with its cross cultural mediterranean influences.

Their efforts were rewarded by the Award of Music Achievement in the 2001 [[Malta Music Awards]], held in [[Ta'Qali]].

==The beginning==

In 1999, researcher Steve Borġ, identified a collection of old [[Culture of Malta|Maltese]] melodies at [[King's College London]]. These melodies had been published by Welshman [[Edward Jones (harpist)f|Edward Jones]], formerly the bard to the [[Prince of Wales]], around [[1807]]. Borġ made the melodies public through Etnika in 2000 at the official launch of an exhibition on traditional Maltese instruments. Jones, born in [[Bala]] [[North Wales]], is attributed to having collected hundreds of Welsh melodies during his walks around the principality.

At the same time composer Ruben Zahra was returning to Malta following years of academic studies at the [[Conservatorio di Musica di Frosinone]], the [[Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia]] in [[Rome]] and the [[Accademia Musicale Chigiana]] in [[Siena]].

Meanwhile folklorist Guzi Gatt was intrigued by an article written well over twenty years before about the demise of the Maltese bagpipe, the ''żaqq''.

In 1977 two British students, J.K. Partridge and Frank Jeal, published their research, entitled 'The Maltese Żaqq', in The [[Galpin Society]] Journal. It remains one of the most scholarly and informative works written in this instrument to date. Other than describing the ''żaqq'' 's musical abilities, the authors also claimed that "The Maltese, with few notable exceptions, show little interest in their own folk culture, and any artificial attempts at revival seem unlikely to succeed. It seems sad that an island that can boast an excellent Scots pipe band, can find no room to preserve, perhaps even develop, its own native bagpipe."

The Etnika project also aimed at resuscitating traditional Maltese instruments that had fallen out of use and presenting these forgotten soundscapes to Maltese society, with an aim to raise national consciousness.

These instruments included the ''flejguta'' (cane [[whistle flute]]), the ''żummara'' (single [[reed pipe]]), the ''tanbur'' ([[frame drum]]), the ''żafżava'' (friction drum) and the ''żaqq'' (Maltese [[bagpipe]]).out Toni Cachia Il-Ħammarun from [[Naxxar]], one of Malta's remaining Maltese bagpipe builders and musicians. Well into his eighties, he had been playing the traditional instrument since the late 1920s. Cachia agreed to help Gatt in his quest of saving the żaqq from extinction.

==2000 Nafra==

Etnik''a gave their first public concert during the [[Evenings on Campus]] festival on 29 August 2000 at the [[Atriju Vassalli]] in the [[University of Malta]], during which the album Nafra was released. The album has eleven instrumental tracks, three of which taken from [[Edward Jones (harpist)|Edward Jones's]] publication of circa 1807. It featured [[Godfrey Mifsud]] on clarinet, Mario Frendo on violin, David Grech on guitar, Tricia Dawn Williams on piano, Jason Fabri on drums, Joe Camilleri l-Bibi on percussion and Ruben Żahra on ''żaqq'' and other traditional instruments. Amongst the most popular tracks were ''Ragħaj'' (Shepherd) and l-''Għanja tal-Mewġ'''' (Waves Song). Malta's eminent folklorist [[Guze Cassar Pullicino]] was amongst those present.

In 2003, a second album, Żifna (Dance), was released at the Bedouin Bar in [[San Giljan]] [[Malta]]. This was a more acoustic album and was produced by [[Andrew Alamango]] and [[Andrej Vujicic]].

In July and August 2003, Etnika presented three concerts entitled Bumbum, at [[Fort St. Elmo]] [[Valletta]] under the Etnikafe concept of fusing their music with flamenco. This project also included a total of twenty musicians, including four brass musicians, three traditional musicians and two ''għannejja'' folk singers, namely [[Frans Baldacchino]] ''il-Budaj'' and [[Toni Spiteri]] ''Tal-Ġebel''.

A few months later they collaborated with [[Kneehigh Theatre]] from [[Cornwall]] and a Cypriot theatrical company in a dramatic presentation called [[A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings]]

'''Walter Micallef''' (born 24 October 1955) is a leading Maltese singer songwriter, born in the central Maltese town of [[Birkirkara]]. He has composed well over a hundred songs, nearly all in Maltese.

==Childhood==
He spent his childhood in [[Birkirkara]], [[Malta]]'s largest town, at a time when his family home was requisitioned by the state to make way for a public convenience. Like other Maltese boys of the age, he revelled in driving around the island and on visiting the neighbouring islands of [[Gozo]] and [[Comino]]. Three of his earlier songs, all still unreleased, are ''Ġewwa Marsalforn'' (In [[Marsalforn]]), ''Erġajt Sejjer Marsalforn'' (Going back to [[Marsalforn]]) and ''Xagħar Iswed'' (Black Hair).

The first two are both played on the [[reggae]] beat and have only been performed in [[Valletta]] in 2004 and in [[Xewkija]] [[Gozo]] in 2005. The track ''Xagħar Iswed'', written when Micallef was only seventeen, bears witness that the artiste was always romantically inclined and recurring phrases in his lyrics still comment on the beauty he admires in simplicity. A literal translation of a stanza taken from ''Xagħar Iswed'', written in 1972, goes as:

''Black and wavy hair, beautiful lips, mellow smile, it's our love that I seek, I admire her and she knows all this.''

It is thought that these three songs may feature in his forthcoming third album, expected to be released in 2009.

==Musical Influences==
He has cited the Italian [[Giorgio Gaber]], [[Gino Paoli]] and American [[Jim Croce]] and [[James Taylor]] as his major musical influences, although at times he has also played [[Cat Stevens]] songs. Critics, however, believe that Micallef has also the fiery [[Bruce Cockburn]] spirit in him and the [[Lou Reed]] cynicism in his lyrics. ''Lil Malta'' may after all be his equal to Reed's [[Last Great American Whale]].

Micallef has maintained that as a Maltese counterpart he mentions [[Manwel Mifsud]], unfortunately barely known in the musical field. [[Graziana Axisa]] has played as a supporting act in a major [[Marsascala]] concert in 2006. Axisa has also sung Micallef's song ''Għaċ-Ċkejkna'' in the 2005 Għanja Tal-Poplu festival, placing a creditable second.

Artistic works in Maltese are minimal since there is no national strategy to assist or promote performers singing in their mother tongue. European Union funds are hard to acquire considering that Maltese is an official EU language, and not a minority one. Micallef has lamented about this shortcoming many times [http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=20364].

==Musical career==
Micallef has won the major artistic awards that Maltese singing provides. He has won the ''Għanja tal-Poplu'' festival [http://www.ytc.org.mt/mus_en.html], founded by the Youth Travel Circle in 1973, several times. In 1979 he won with ''Ġuvni'' (Young Man), followed with success in 1992 with ''Iż-Żmien'' (Time) and in 1994 with ''In-Nofsinhar'' (The South). He has also won best lyrics in 1994 with ''Le'' (No), in 1999 with ''Sieħbi fil-Cupboard tal-Kċina'' (My friend in the Cupboard), in 2005 with ''Għaċ-Ċkejkna'' (For the Little One) and in 2006 with ''Lil Malta'' (A Song for Malta).

Writing in Malta Today on 23 March 2001, critic Miriam Dunn remarks that "listening to the intelligent usage he makes of the Maltese language in his work, it is difficult to imagine that some years back, Walter made a conscious decision to switch his songwriting from the English language".

Although he had been around since 1973, it was in February 2003 that he released his first album, after a chance meeting with [[Radio Malta]] world music presenter [[Steve Borġ]]. The first album was entitled ''M'Jien Xejn'' (I am Nothing)[http://www.di-ve.com/dive/portal/portal.jhtml?id=81422&pid=67]. Already considered as a classic release, it contains fifteen tracks written between 1981 and 2001. ''Awwissu'' (August) remains his most popular track from this album, and has even been used, albeit to his surprise, as an advert for an air-conditioning brand on Maltese television. He has lamented that his lyrics have, at times, had a lukewarm reception by the Maltese public, perhaps due to the islanders' inbred conservative upbringing and years of political polarisation.

With Maltese society opening up to self-appraisal and criticism, he has been embraced by a growing band of devotees who follow him to all his venues. He has given memorable concerts at The Labyrinth in [[Valletta]], The Beachclub in [[Marsascala]], The George in [[Bugibba]] and [[Marsalforn]] Sajf in [[Gozo]].

On the 18 March 2004 he launched his [[Walter Micallef u l-Ħbieb]] band, including [[Etnika]]'s double bassist Oliver DeGabriele, as Malta's representative in the [[UNESCO]] Suisse charity event One World Beat [http://www.oneworldbeat.org/pages/eventDetail.php?eventId=68]. This was followed by four concerts in July 2004 at St. James Cavalier Arts Centre in [[Valletta]], featuring his current sextet.

He has also made appearances on German television stations [[ZDF]] and [[Bayerisches Fernsehen]] and on several regional French stations. He is regularly played on Maltese radio stations and on ethnic Maltese radio programmes in Australia.

Micallef was shortlisted for Best Male Artist in 2004 for the Malta Music Awards, and has continued to win acclaim and awards for his prowess in writing Maltese lyrics complimented by original melodies. ''Ħamsin'' includes twelve tracks, with thematic content ranging from romantic songs such as ''Wara l-Ħajt'' (Behind the Wall) and ''Min Hi?'' (Who is She?) to pro-environmental songs like ''L-Aħħar Sekondi'' (The Final Seconds) and ''Lil Malta'' (A Song for Malta). The musical arrangements are by [[Renzo Spiteri]]. '''Lil Malta''' is fast becoming Malta's environmental battlecry against building speculation in an erstwhile over-built island state.

On 6 May 2007 the album was on top of the [[D'Amato Music]] Best 20 Malta hit parade. Unlike many Maltese musicians, Walter Micallef does not have his hotel spot as an entertainer. He is after all, a performer and as such the requests he accedes to are those pertaining to his vast repertoire. He prefers to play live and avoids playback. He is also currently rehearsing on performing some of his Maltese songs with a classic quintet featuring guitar, bassoon, flute, clarinet and oboe.

Keeping Malta's Music Alive

Everybody knows the story of how the classic Maltese song [[Viva Malta]] was written. After all, its composer [[Freddie Portelli]] has fortunately told the tale many a time during his countless performances all over the island. But how many people know that the first international pop hit by a Maltese artist was [[Jon Lukas]]’ [[Can’t Afford to Lose]] in the 1970s, or that the Maltese rock scene started to emerge in the 1960s thanks largely to a British band based in Malta to entertain the British troops stationed here? ‘Not many’ is the probable answer, and the reason for this is that the Maltese modern music scene’s development and growth has never really been properly documented in an easily accessible manner. Up until now, the closest thing to it would be to spend ages at the National Library sifting through decades of newspapers, but that’s hardly what one might call easily accessible now, is it?

There have been efforts throughout the years to find alternatives by some individuals, such as the short-lived [[RockMalta.com]] and [[JJ Formosa]]’s (more) indie-focused [[The Alternative Joint]], both sites having surfaced soon after I had launched my own [[Lib66 Homepage of Maltese Music]] back in 2002. All of these sites however - mine included – were reliant on a ‘personal homepage with free-hosting’ approach and so their growth was relatively slow to the point that they couldn’t (and didn’t) keep up with the evolving technology and the fast-paced development of the local music scene.

Fortunately, around the end of 2005, Dr.[[Toni Sant]], Director of Research in Arts and New Media at the University of Hull and a familiar face in Maltese broadcasting and the arts, launched the first of his [[Mużika Mod Ieħor]] podcasts, a weekly series of short programmes focusing entirely on music by Maltese artistes, extending his attention also to those based abroad or with Maltese family origins. The series is now in its fifth year and growing in popularity. More importantly, all of the podcasts – right up to this week’s 226th edition – are readily available online, providing a historical overview of the Maltese music scene’s development on demand.

Inspired by the positive reception to his podcasts, the efforts of the above-mentioned websites, his own experience as a participant in the Maltese music scene and his expertise in multimedia, Dr. Sant envisaged a structure that could incorporate all of these factors into one comprehensive set-up that could finally provide an easily accessible archive. More than that however, it had to be an online structure that allowed for ongoing development to be continuously documented; rather than being just a source of reference, this website would need to be a living thing.

Roping in a number of people to assist him, Dr. Sant and his team have been working incessantly under the radar to co-ordinate the M3P Project. In case you were wondering, M3P (not MP3) stands for Malta Music Memory Project and it’s going to be officially launched this Saturday with a symposium that will include presentations by the M3P team and various people related to the local music scene, a Networking Workshop to explain how the website works and an evening concert that will also form part of the Notte Bianca schedule featuring bands that aren’t often heard on the local airwaves.

M3P is short for the Malta Music Memory Project. This project revolves around a collaborative multimedia database of Maltese music and associated arts.

There are no proper national sound archives in Malta. There are no seriously organized broadcasting archives either. However there are several impressive, even if small, private collections by enthusiasts who could easily provide for this gap through a system of collaboration that can put together an archive that open and all inclusive. Take a look at Facebook as a closed, exclusive example of this and you'll get a sense of what I'm on about here.

Truth be told, I've also been looking for a way to combine my interest on art and entertainment in Malta with my professional academic activities in the UK. So on a personal level, this project aims to do just that. In the process I believe that we will be creating something that's beneficial and useful for generations to come.

The theme for this show was selected by M3P founder Toni Sant to enable types of music and specific rock bands (that rarely receive radio airplay) to reach a broader audience.

==Networking Workshop==
An M3P networking workshop will take place at St James Cavalier in Valletta at 6pm, immediately after the Inaugural Symposium.

This part of the M3P launch starts out with a live acoustic gig by [[Rita Pace]] in the Music Room, featuring guitarists [[Kalcidon "ta' Mustaċċa" Vella]], [[Denise "ta' Kalċ" Vella]], and [[Willie Saliba]], and pianist [[Clifford Borg]].

In the Studio next door to the Music Room, key stakeholders from the M3P team will be demonstrating how entries to the database can be submitted by anyone interested in contributing collaboratively to the preservation of the collective and personal memories. Performers and music lovers are invited to see how their own entries can also be created and/or updated live for all to see.

The proceedings for this part of the M3P launch will also include a VJ session with [[Alfie Fabri]], addressing the need for a video archive of Maltese music.

Can we revisit the overall look and feel of the wiki? Specifically: choice of fonts for headers and use of red and blue lettering. ==Academic Research==
Academic research is an essential dimension of this project. The collaborative partners on this aspect of M3P are from the University of Hull (led by Dr [[Toni Sant]] from the School of Arts & New Media and supported by researcher [[Alex Grech]]) and the University of Malta (Dr Ing Saviour Zammit from the Dept. of Communications & Computer Engineering and Dr Albert Bell from Youth & Community Studies). A position paper by Toni Sant appears in the current issue of the Journal of Music, Technology & Education. An academic conference is being planned to take place in Malta in late Spring 2011 to address this particular aspect of M3P. ==M3P Launch==
The project will be launched during ''Notte Bianca: Lejl Imdawwal'' in Valletta, Malta on 25th September 2010, with an [[M3P:Inaugural Symposium|Inaugural Symposium]] and Networking Workshop at the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. The launch events will also include evening concert called [[You Rarely Hear This On the Radio!]] at Hastings Garden.

==Academic Research==
Academic research is an essential dimension of this project. The collaborative partners on this aspect of M3P are from the University of Hull (led by Dr [[Toni Sant]] from the School of Arts & New Media and supported by researcher [[Alex Grech]]) and the University of Malta (Dr Ing Saviour Zammit from the Dept. of Communications & Computer Engineering and Dr Albert Bell from Youth & Community Studies). A position paper by Toni Sant appears in the current issue of the Journal of Music, Technology & Education. An academic conference is being planned to take place in Malta in late Spring 2011 to address this particular aspect of M3P.
