While at the University of Malta, Maria took part in the DegreePlus Music, which turned out to be quite a memorable and a-once-in-a-life-time experience for her. It was a means of meeting new people who shared the same passion for music and together creating a symphony. In December 2008 she took part in the Songwriter contest at Saint James Cavalier where she sang a song she had written herself Leave me Alone. In 2009 she formed part of the band Dream Pipes where she was the backing vocalist of the band. Maria Debono Scicluna is a singer and songwriter who was born on April 28, 1990. She hails from Victoria, Gozo and recently graduated in Psychology at the University of Malta.

She has been singing from the tender age of eight, starting off by being a member of the choir Fraternitas that is managed by Mary Rose Attard. She first stepped on stage in the musical Oliver Twist (2000). Following that successful presentation she participated in other musicals like My Fair Lady (2001), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2003) and Madre Teresa (2007).

Her first solo performance came at the Festival Marjan at the Don Bosco Oratory in 2003, with the song Nintelaq f'Idejk lyrics written by Mary Rose Attard. Maria Debono Scicluna was classified a very close second on her debut attempt. This gave her more confidence in pursuing her dream of a career as a singer. During 2003 she participated in other festivals nevertheless it was her second participation at the Festival Marjan in 2004 that rewarded her for her great potential and outstanding effort. She managed a highly deserved 1st prize with the song Kuraġġ Ħabib with lyrics written by Mary Rose Attard. The Festival Marjan of 2007 turned out to be another success for her as again she won top honours with the song Int u Jien written once again by Mary Rose Attard.

In 2005 she participated in Dell' Alpi Dominique Summer Singer in which she won the 1st prize in her category and was also the overall winner with her song.

In 2006 she was invited to participate in the programme Zmeraldi Teens where she featured on a regular basis discussing current issues and expressing her ideas with her peers. Her involvement with Zmeraldi Teens lasted till 2009.

While at the University of Malta, Maria took part in the DegreePlus Music, which turned out to be quite a memorable and a-once-in-a-life-time experience for her. It was a means of meeting new people who shared the same passion for music and together creating a symphony. One of her favourite hobbies is to do gigs around the islands and was fortunate enough to have performed at well known establishments such as Bj's and Noise. She also sings during special occasions such as baptisms, engagements and weddings accompanied by acoustic guitar which tends to be her favourite instrument.

Participating in L-Għanja tal-Poplu has been something that she aspired to for quite some time. Her first appearance at that festival was in Dicember 2009 when she had the opportunity to be the backing vocalist for Teddy Zammit in the song Għatuni Ċans which he wrote and composed himself. This song was awarded the best themed song. In 2012 she went a step further as she was chosen from amongst 42 participants for the finals of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. She participated with the song 'Mhux Illum' written by Rita Pace and composed by Mark Laurence Zammit.

Maria has a very positive outlook and is quite confident that new opportunities will present themselves in the near future. With the talent she has as a singer as well as a song writer it may well be that her objective in pursuing a career in music could soon become a reality.
